"Weird Weather - Funnels" by Lisa Grossman Image
Grossman Statement:

From earliest memory I have found solace and joy in nature’s enduring presence. I felt grounded in nature as it was my measure to hold everything else up to. Now that yardstick is bent and twisting with each day. The effects of climate disruption and the way the debris of humanity reaches the remotest polar shorelines and ocean depths is overwhelming. I have a disconcerting sense that I can no longer “trust” what I’m feeling and seeing in nature. I find myself haunted by what the skies “should” look like—what would they look like if the industrial revolution and air travel had never happened? Would they be clearer, more colorful? And with climate warming, I wonder how what I see is evolving—do the storms look different in some way? Are the cloud formations different than they would be otherwise? I listen to climate scientists, but as an artist/observer I can’t know these unanswerable questions.

As a weather watcher I find storms exhilarating and especially enjoy painting them as they roll in. Forecasts increasingly use the word “unprecedented” to describe winds, storm strength, rainfall amounts, fire damage, etc., and I’m finding a sense of fear and dread mingle with my excitement at what might materialize.

For years I’ve included weather shifts, storms and lightning in my work and these print panels emerged out of my “Weird Weather” series.

Funnels is a fine art print panel - Relief-roll woodcut on rice papers, mixed media, 24 x 12 inches
